Wisdom and sandalwood.

The teachings of Buddha have always interested me.     I also love the perfume that sandalwood yields.   Many years ago now my son was travelling with a friend through a remote region of Thailand.   They stumbled across a village and found an old man carving from sandalwood.
My son sat and chatted with him and whilst doing so noticed this beautiful piece.
He asked if it was for  sale.    The old man said that he was willing to do that.
I treasure this gift from my son........I often hold buddha in my hands and imagine the elderly man sitting carving.   It brings me a profound sense of peace and tranquility.    There is a lot of love in this piece......

DHAMMAPADA

Hatreds never cease by hatreds in this world.   By love alone they cease.    This is an ancient law.

  1. I can just see you sitting there with Buddah rubbing that little belly. He is a delight.

The ribbon in the first post is gorgeous. What a treasure that is.

For some reason my computer won't let me into your comment box on the first one. I will have to run the cleaners to see if there is a bug in my computer.

I think I am going to like this little blog full of treasures.

    1. Hi Lisa,

I hope you enjoy it. I thought it would make a change for me, to think about something other than my garden (very difficult, as I love it so much :)

I love little objects.......they fascinate me!

  2. I inhale and close my eyes. I feel the peace.
I exhale and smile. I feel the joy.
    Thank you.
This is a loving Buddha....Sandalwood is healing on so many different levels.
The mudra your Buddha is holding with his right hand is one I often hold.
I find it helps to clear my mind and lower my blood pressure....When I cannot spin I can always do my mudra.
Your son is amazing...a gorgeous gift.
    Namaste,
    Sherry

    1. Dear Sherry,

Meditation takes many forms, we each find that which suits us.

Sandalwood is connected to spirituality.....I have always loved the scent. My son bought me sandalwood perfume for Christmas :)

    1. Hi Laura,

I don't really know why I started this blog. I was on my own in the house, and started playing around with new layouts. Before I knew it, I had another blog Ha!
I do not know if it will work....tastes are so different but I hope it will give an insight into the sort of person I am.

  4. What a dear your son is. He must have known how much this Buddha would mean to you - far beyond an ordinary gift. It's a beautiful piece of art, so serene.

As life goes on I too am drawn to the teachings of Buddha. Years ago I would not have listened.

I remember long ago when I was a young girl, my mother had taken me downtown Montreal for a shopping trip. Somehow we entered a Chinese shop. I don't really know why as my mother was a down-to-earth person and not drawn to anything exotic, but maybe she was curious. Immediately I could smell sandalwood incense burning. I didn't know what it was, but I imagine someone told me. I thought the smell was heavenly, but my mother did not buy any. I don't think she liked it, nor would she have had the money for anything other than basic necessities.

Years later (in the hippie era) when incense became fashionable, I would look for specifically for sandalwood. I never really thought about sandalwood being a wood one could carve. Thank you for the interesting post.

  5. Dear Wendy,

I love Sandalwood incense, it is always my first choice. When I visited Thailand a few years ago they would burn it when they said their prayers. The smoke is said to take your prayers to higher places.
Apparently sandalwood is often used for spiritual carvings.
